Marriage License Use:
- A Marriage License purchased in the State of Louisiana must be used in the State of Louisiana.
Time Requirement:
- The marriage license will expire 30 days from the application date
- There is a 24 hour waiting period before the license can be used
Required Documents:
- Certified copy of both parties Birth Certificates
- If one of the applicants does not have a birth certificate, an Order waiving the birth certificate with a letter from the proper registration authority stating that a thorough search was made and no birth record was located is required. If either cannot be provided, a judicial waiver of birth certificate can be obtained.
- Photo Identification of the party who appears to apply for the license.
- Social Security Numbers (If a party was never issued a Social Security Number, an Affidavit of No Social must be provided)
- If one of the parties has previously been married, a date of divorce or death of the previous marriage is required.
- No marriage license shall be issued to a minor under the age 16. Minors of the age of 16 or 17 must have judicial authorization and consent from both parents.
- If one of the applicants was born outside of the United States, the following is required:
- Certified copy of the party’s Birth Certificate accompanied by either a valid and unexpired passport or an unexpired visa accompanied by Form I-94 as issued by the United States. (Note: If the birth certificate is in a language other than English, a certified translation of the birth certificate with a sworn declaration of the translator stating they are fluent in the original language must be attached.)
- Certificate of Naturalization
- If a certified copy of the birth certificate or certificate of naturalization cannot be provided, a judicial waiver of birth certificate can be obtained.
